What Is A Young Carer?

January 30, 2019 | admin

Thursday 31st January 2019 is Young Carers Awareness Day, run by the carers trust.  A young carer is someone under 18 who helps support a relative with a disability, mental health condition, illness, or drug/alcohol problem.

New research by BBC News and the University of Nottingham suggests there could be 800,000 secondary age children who are young carers in England.  That’s more that one in five children aged between 11-17.

Giles Meyer, CEO of Carers Trust responded to the research;

“This new data blows all previous figures out of the water, revealing a generation of young carers who are being neglected by society…This is a monumental wake-up call for us all to take responsibility for these vulnerable children”

Many young carers struggle to balance their education alongside caring, leading to additional pressure and stress.  Over a quarter of young carers reported being bullied at school because of their caring role, affecting their health, social life and self-confidence.

Young Carers Awareness Day 2019 will focus on mental health by linking with the new Carers Trust campaign #CareForMeToo.  The campaign aspires to raise awareness about mental health and improve support for young carers.

What’s the end goal?  For the public and especially people who can make a difference such as politicians, commissioners and service providers, to pledge clear action to help young carers develop and maintain good mental health.

“Carers Trust is calling on the government to take urgent action to make sure that the rights they enshrined in law to protect all young carers are being delivered by local authorities” (Giles Meyer)
